Steel Band Workshops
The most popular format for a steel band workshop would be for either two or three musicians to come in for a whole day. This would normally consist of a performance during a morning assembly and one at the end of the day, with individual talks to each class through out the day (although the format is very flexible).
The Music
Steel drum music is most commonly associated with the Caribbean and this is the genre that is mostly taught. The steel pan is a versatile instrument however, and fits well with a variety of other styles including classical, jazz and even Christmas carols!
The Workshops
One Off Workshops would typically last for a day and include a performance at the beginning of the day, the end of the day, or both. The rest of the day can either be spent giving a talk to classes, or giving tuition to smaller groups of Children. Hand outs are given to each group catered for and the age of the children is carefully considered.
Regular Workshops could be once a month over a year or once a week over a term or half term. A regular spot could allow more children to get more closely involved or to allow some children to progress to a higher level over time.
The Teachers
Teachers are available individually or as part of a band, both of which can be beneficial.
All of our teachers have previous experience in both teaching in schools and in performance. They are all CRB checked and insured for public liability. References can be provided from other schools on request.
The Benefits
While most music is beneficial to children, the uplifting nature of the sound of the pans is particularly stimulating. The pans are also quite different to many other instruments and can broaden children’s awareness of music in ways that traditional percussion instruments may not.
